  • “Boomer Sooner” is the famous official fight song and rallying cry of the University of Oklahoma. The name comes from 19th-century history: “Boomers” agitated to open unassigned settlement lands, while “Sooners” snuck across the border early to claim land before the official 1889 Land Run. Today, it represents school pride.
  • The nickname “Pokes” and rallying cry “Go Pokes” come from “cowpokes,” a historical slang term for cowboys. Founded in 1890 as Oklahoma A&M, athletic teams originally were known as the Aggies until the 1920s when the Cowboy identity and Pistol Pete mascot were embraced, eventually leading to the official “Cowboys” and “Pokes” monikers.
  • The bobbleheads are being released in conjunction with College Colors Day, which is celebrated annually on the Friday before Labor Day for the start of the new college football season and school year. The fall semester began at Oklahoma State on Monday, August 17th, and at Oklahoma on Monday, August 24th. The Sooners open the 2026 football season on Friday, September 4th against UTEP at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, while the Cowboys open their season on Saturday, September 5th against Tulsa at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
