- On Saturday, April 11th, the Denver Pioneers won their third national title in five years with a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin in the NCAA Frozen Four Championship before a crowd of 17,849 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
- The victory extended the Pioneers’ record to 11 national titles overall and denied the Badgers their seventh championship and first since 2006.
- Denver (29-11-3) outlasted No. 1 Michigan, 4-3 in 2OT, in the semifinals on Thursday, April 9th. In Saturday’s final, Kyle Chyzowski tipped in a shot from the point with 5:52 remaining for the go-ahead goal. Rieger Lorenz scored the game-tying goal at 7:31 in the third period. Garrett Brown was credited with an assist on both goals, while Kristian Epperson and Boston Buckberger also had assists.
- fter making 49 saves in the semifinal victory against Michigan, 5-foot-10 freshman goaltender Johnny Hicks had 29 saves against the Badgers. He was named the Frozen Four’s Most Outstanding Player after also receiving that honor in Denver’s conference and regional tournaments. Buckberger, Chyzowski, and Lorenz joined Hicks on the All-Tournament Team. “You don’t have to be big in hockey to be good,” eighth-year Denver coach David Carle said. “You have to invest, and you have to care and have the right people to do things. In college athletics, I think a place like Denver should really be celebrated.”
- “Bobbleheads are the ultimate way to celebrate a team’s championship, and these bobbleheads will be the ultimate way for Pioneer fans to commemorate the Denver men’s hockey team’s 11th national title,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “We’re excited to be unveiling these bobbleheads celebrating another Denver championship. These bobbleheads are sure to be must-haves for fans of the Denver Pioneers!”
