- The University of Alabama’s “Crimson Tide” nickname and “Roll Tide” rallying cry originated from a muddy 1907 football game against Auburn. Sportswriter Hugh “Doc” Roberts used the phrase to describe the team battling through red clay, and the expression evolved into the program’s iconic signature greeting and identity. The university’s fight song, “Yea Alabama,” written in 1926, features lyrics encouraging the team to “roll on to victory” and reference the “Crimson Tide.” Over time, fans and media shortened the phrasing into the punchy, rhythmic cadence “Roll Tide” as an expression of school pride.
- “War Eagle is a battle cry, yell, or motto of Auburn University and supporters of Auburn sports teams. “War Eagle is a greeting or salutation among Auburn students, fans, and alumni. It is also the title of the university’s fight song and the name of the university’s live golden eagle mascot.

The fall semester began at Auburn on Monday, August 17th, and at Alabama on Wednesday, August 19th. The Crimson Tide open the 2026 football season on Saturday, September 5th against East Carolina at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, while the Tigers open on the same day against Baylor in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
