This morning, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled the first Kansas Jayhawks vs. Kansas State Wildcats Football Rivalry Bobblehead ahead of Saturday’s rivalry game. The officially licensed bobblehead featuring Kansas mascot Big Jay and Kansas State mascot Willie the Wildcat with a replica of the Governor’s Cup commemorates the longtime football rivalry, which is known as the Sunflower Showdown.
The special edition bobblehead is being released in conjunction with the 123rd meeting between the Jayhawks and Wildcats. The bobblehead are available exclusively from the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, an official licensee of the University of Kansas and Kansas State University.
- The bobbleheads are now available in the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s Online Store at this link.
- The bobbleheads, which are expected to ship in April, are $50 each plus a flat-rate shipping charge of $8 per order.
- Each bobblehead will be individually numbered to 2,025.
- The bobblehead is being released in conjunction with the 123rd meeting between the teams on Saturday, October 25th at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas.
- Standing side-by-side on a football field base that reads “JAYHAWKS” in one end zone and “WILDCATS” in the other end zone, Kansas mascot Big Jay and Kansas State mascot Willie the Wildcat are wearing their respective uniforms while giving the No. 1 signal and holding a football adorned with their school logo. Positioned in between Big Jay and Willie is a replica of the Governor’s Cup Trophy. The front of the base features the logos for each team.
- The Kansas and Kansas State football teams first squared off in 1902. They have faced each other every season since 1911, making it the fifth-longest continuous series in college football history. It is the second-longest rivalry between two public universities in the same state behind Oregon and Oregon State.
- Since 1993, the Wildcats have dominated the series with a 28-4 record, including an active 16-game winning streak – the longest by either team in series history. KSU won last year’s game 29-27.
- The winner of the game receives the Governor’s Cup, which is the third trophy associated with the rivalry. In 1902, in the first matchup, a “Governor’s Trophy” was given to the winning team. Then, beginning in 1940, the winner received the “Peace Pact Trophy,” which was miniature bronze goalposts. The trophy was intended to keep the winning team’s student body from tearing down the loser’s goalposts. The first Governor’s Cup game was played in 1969.
- “We’re excited to unveil the first Kansas vs. Kansas State Rivalry Bobblehead ahead of tomorrow’s game in Lawrence,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “This bobblehead will be the perfect way for Kansas and Kansas State fans, alumni, students, faculty, and staff to show off their school and state pride!”
- The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, which is located at 170 S. 1st. St. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, opened to the public on February 1st, 2019. The HOF and Museum also produces high quality, customized bobbleheads for retail sale as well as organizations, individuals, and teams across the country.
