On this day in 1939, Lou Gehrig, the legendary New York Yankees first baseman, stepped away from the game after 17 remarkable seasons. A seven-time All-Star, six-time World Series champion, and two-time MVP, Gehrig’s legacy extends far beyond the field. Diagnosed with ALS—now known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease—he inspired millions with his courage and humility. Today, we honor his enduring impact on baseball and the world.
