- On Saturday, March 21st, the top-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions captured another national title at the 2026 NCAA Championships at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. It was the 14th NCAA title (and 15th overall) for Penn State. Under 17th-year head coach Cael Sanderson, the Nittany Lions have won 13 national titles since 2011 and five in a row. Penn State won the team title with181.5 points, breaking its own record of 177 points set in 2025. It was the third consecutive year that Penn State set a new NCAA record. “I think this has been an incredible year,” Sanderson said. “Happy for the team. Just an incredible group of guys. We’re very blessed and very grateful.”
- Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Levi Haines (174), Josh Barr (197), and Luke Lilledahl (125) all won their championship matches as Penn State went 4-2 with a record-tying six national finalists. With the four titles won this year, the Nittany Lions now have 65 NCAA champions and 44 since Sanderson’s arrival as head coach. In defending his national title, Mesenbrink was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler and was also given the NCAA Most Dominant Wrestler Award, a season-long award given by the NCAA. Haines also won his second consecutive national championship.
- The Blue and White put four other athletes on the podium. Shayne Van Ness (149) and Rocco Welsh (184) were both national runners-up. Penn State’s other All-Americans included PJ Duke (third at 157) and Marcus Blaze (fourth at 133). Duke was the Gorriaran Award winner for the most falls in the least amount of time in the tournament.
- “Bobbleheads are the ultimate way to celebrate a team’s championship, and this bobblehead will be the ultimate way for Nittany Lion fans to commemorate the Penn State wrestling team’s 2026 national championship,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “We’re excited to be unveiling a bobblehead celebrating Penn State’s 14th NCAA title in wrestling – and fifth in a row.
