Beyond the Scoreboard: Tourists celebrate ‘Bull Durham’ with jersey sale, bobbleheads ByΒ Keith Jarrett
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) βΒ To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the popular baseball movie βBull Durhamβ on Saturday, the Asheville Tourists will wear uniforms featured in the movie and will give away Crash Davis bobbleheads.
Parts of the movie, starring Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon, were shot at McCormick Field, home of the Tourists.
Davis, Costnerβs fictional character in the movie, is ready to quit the game after a long minor league career but hangs on long enough to sign with the Tourists and break the minor league home-run record in a game at McCormick Field.
The Tourists, in their game versus Augusta on Saturday, will wear the uniforms featured in the movie, which many list as the best baseball movie ever made.
And those custom-tailored uniforms will be available for auction for fans to own. Fans canΒ go onlineΒ now through midnight June 19 to bid on the uniforms. A buy now option is available.
Proceeds from the jersey auction will benefit the Asheville Tourists/Eblen Charities Childrenβs Fund, a nonprofit organization that buys shoes for Buncombe County children.
In addition, the first 1,000 fans through the gate Saturday will receive a Crash Davis bobblehead, a promotion presented by Harryβs on the Hill.
Gates open at 5 p.m., and game time is 6:05 p.m.
ESPN has named Saturdayβs Crash Davis night at McCormick Field the Minor League Baseball Promotion of the Week. The Crash Davis uniforms the Tourists will wear have already been showcased on SportsCenter and Around the Horn.
Fans can pick up a limited-edition Crash Davis themed game day program as they enter the front gates. The program features a 30-year overdue acknowledgement by the Sporting News of Crashβs record-breaking accomplishment.
TheΒ Asheville Tourists/Eblen Charities Childrenβs FundΒ is celebrating its 20th year of helping local kids. In partnership with Eblenβs If the Shoe Fits Program, the Childrenβs Fund has raised more than $375,000 and distributed nearly 30,000 pairs of shoes for Buncombe County kids.
